A new concept of structural adhesive

​Structural adhesives have an important role in the composites sector by providing a high technological and structural value to advanced structures. This material develops itself in complete synergy with new technologies and concepts focused on composite materials.

​Its capacity is demonstrated in many applications, from the bonding of vehicle’s structures such as bus roofs, to a complete bonding of two halves of a 70 meter length wind turbine blade.
This year, another huge step has been taken towards structural adhesives industry after the demonstration of a new product developed by The American Chemistry Council (ACC) and researchers at Michigan State University (MSU).
Known as “Reversible Adhesive” is a thermoplastic adhesive for multi-material joining that becomes stronger after use and repair/rebonding, which is a significant development for the repairability and end-of-life recyclability of CFRP-intensive (carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer) vehicles, for example.

The thermoplastic adhesive contains iron microspheres that vibrate with electric current and become very hot, 320 to 800°F (160 to 427°C) within seconds, melting the thermoplastic adhesive before the surrounding material heats up. It then can harden in seconds, essentially becoming fast-acting glue that bonds over and over on demand.

low Flying  craft in Composites

A Singapore company named Wigetworks showed a new concept of nautical transportation by introducing its new craft called “AirFish 8”.

​By using a unique aerodynamic design and a light structure made in Composite Materials, “Airfish 8” provides a fast maritime transportation with a fuel efficiency in a craft that can be docked like a boat and fly a few meters above the surface like a plane with an average cruise speed of 150 Km/h.
“Airfish 8”  is powered by a powerful V8 car engine that runs on gasoline, reducing drastically its costs if compared to traditional aviation fuel commonly used on aircrafts.

CRc visits Composites Congress in Argentina

CRC Composites visited  the South American Composites, Polyurethane and engineering Plastics Congress that happened on August 15th and 16th in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

With a big variety of Exhibitors and lectures about many subjects related to Composites, The congress itself proved to be very attractive for the South American Composites Industry.
The main goal of the congress was to show new solutions in raw materials, equipment, and auxiliary materials to produce products in composite materials, focusing on Thermoplastic, Thermoset and Polyurethane products.
During the Congress, participants had access to an extensive variety of Exhibitors that showed new solutions, information and technology to products made in Composite Materials.

Composites, The opportunity of its potential

  The polymeric composite materials, besides being present on our daily basis for a short period of time compared to other medieval materials such as steel or wood, have increased Its visibility and space in many market sectors by offering efficient and practical solutions that contain technology, innovation and consequently more value to the products made this way.
  Its potential is easily justified for the existing diversity in it that varies from simple and beautiful craft  products to high technology and performance components  used in vital segments such as aeronautics, wind energy and sports.
 However, despite being a new material in the eyes of modern society, composites development is slowed down due to the lack of knowledge applied to its engineering or event the conscience of its existence, turning its concepts most times unknown to people around the globe.
  Because of that, many gaps start to become more evident, countries that have strong industries where composites are present with many successes in history are more likely to know it better than other countries where the same industries aren’t that evident or developed.

  According to Composites Manufacturing Magazine, it’s estimated that  per capita composite materials consumption in the United States in 2013 was approximately 7,2 kg (16 pounds), followed by Germany with approximately 3,9 kg (8.6 pounds), Brazil on the other hand, kept an average value of approximately 0,9 kg (1.9 pounds) according to ALMACO/Maxiquim, It is considered a very low score if compared to China, that leaded the BRIC’s per capita composite materials consumption in 2013 with approximately 2,1kg (4.8 pounds).
  But It doesn’t mean that the composites fever didn’t get to the Brazilian land, It means that due to the lack of knowledge and conscious people about the composite materials, plus the lack of professionals with engineering formation about this material, Its development has been too slow to keep following the other countries.   
 For that reason, companies that correctly invest in Composites technology and knowledge in Brazil, can have an opportunity to gain the upper hand in this sector, getting the best of both worlds in a small but promising market.
